Aftercare

So you've got a new tattoo? Here's how to take care of it...

Immediately after the tattoo

Once we’ve finished your tattoo, we’ll clean the area and apply a protective wrap. You’ll need to leave this on for a few hours to protect the skin from bacteria and irritation. When it’s time to remove it, gently wash the area with mild, unscented antibacterial soap and warm water. Pat the skin dry with kitchen roll—never rub—and apply a thin layer of the aftercare ointment we recommend.

First week of healing

During the first week, your tattoo will begin healing and may feel a bit tender, with some redness, swelling and minor bruising. We suggest washing it gently a few a day and keeping it moisturised with a tattoo-safe aftercare ointment. It’s completely normal to see some flaking—just make sure not to pick or scratch at it to protect the artwork. Remember to only wash in running water (no baths, hot tubs or swimming) and keep out of the sun to avoid sun exposure on the tattoo during the healing period.

Week 2-4

As healing continues, the flakes will begin to fall off, and you might notice some dryness or itching. Keep moisturising regularly, and remember to avoid soaking the tattoo in water—so no swimming or baths just yet! By the end of week four, most tattoos are fully healed, though the skin may still be a bit sensitive.

Selecting the best products

Choosing the right products for aftercare is crucial to ensure proper healing. We recommend using fragrance-free lotions and ointments specifically designed for tattoos. Steer clear of petroleum-based products, which can clog your pores and slow down the healing process. If you’re unsure, we’re happy to give you some product recommendations that will work best.

How to clean your new tattoo

To clean your tattoo, use warm water and a mild, unscented antibacterial soap. Use your hands rather than a washcloth or sponge to avoid irritating the skin. After rinsing, pat the area dry with kitchen roll. We recommend washing your tattoo at least once a day, or more if needed, to keep it clean and healthy. After this apply a small amount of your tattoo aftercare cream. A little goes a long way, so be aware not to put too much on, there should be no excess of cream on the tattoo.

How long should you continue aftercare?

You should continue your aftercare routine for at least two to four weeks, or until the tattoo is completely healed. Even after the initial healing phase, it’s a good idea to keep the area moisturised and use SPF to maintain vibrant, healthy skin. Consistent care will help your tattoo stay sharp and beautiful for years to come.

Things to avoid

Avoid swimming, hot tubs, and soaking your tattoo in water until it’s fully healed. Direct sunlight can also harm a healing tattoo, so avoid prolonged sun exposure on your new tattoo. Resist the temptation to pick or scratch at any scabs or peeling skin—this can cause ink loss and scarring.

Long-term aftercare

Even after your tattoo has healed, it’s important to protect it for the long haul. Keep your skin moisturized to prevent dryness and fading. Always use sunscreen to shield your tattoo from UV damage when you’re in the sun. With proper care, your tattoo will stay vibrant and fresh for years.
